Breeder Should Background photo by Todd Breitenfeldt, showing 2 types of biological weed control agents on the noxious weed leafy spurge. The gall (swelling) at the top is caused by a galling fly called the leafy spurge tip gall midge (Spurgia esulae). The leaf feeding damage is caused by the small beetle in the photo that is one of the leafy spurge flea beetles (Aphthona spp.). The damaged stem and the background damaged stem will not flower which helps control this noxious weed. The flea beetles are devastating many infestations of leafy spurge on dry sites in many places throughtout Montana. |
