![]() spotted knapweed (Centaurea stoebe) Priority 2B Weed: Abundant in Montana and widespread in many counties. Toxic to humans and animals. Spotted knapweed contains sesquiterpene lactones, a class of chemicals that can cause allergic reactions and toxicity in grazing animals if consumed in large quantities. Hand pulling or digging using gloves, biological, herbicide and mechanical. Short-lived perennial with a taproot. Plants are suspected to contain toxins that inhibit the growth of neighboring plants (called catechin). Seeds remain viable in the soil for up to eight years. from mtweed.org. This is one of the noxious weeds I work with as part of the Whitehall Biological Weed Control Program where we hire high school students to mass rear, collect and distribute biological weed control agents to help control these weeds. We work with several species of host specific insects that damage and kill this weed. - Todd ![]() One of my students hand pulling spotted knapweed. |
