Updates:  Refresh this page for the most current updates.
9-25: Turah showed signs of beginning whelp at the Helena dog shows on 9-23 so we decided to drive back home to Whitehall that evening.  On the 24th, she began whelping and finished late that evening.  She had 8 pups, 4 males and 4 females.  Three males and one female have natural bob tails inherited from Turah (Oudi is not nb).  However, all the nb tails are still long enough that they will require cropping (the Brittany breed standard says no longer than 4" as an adult) on Monday when all the pups have their tails and dew claws done.  Weights varied from 294 to 340 grams [1oz = 28.35g] so a nice healthy litter with no runts.  Mom and well-fed pups are all settled down and sleeping as of this moment.
9-26: The pups had their tails/dew claws removed this morning.  Albro's tail was short enough that we decided not to crop it.  All are doing well.
10-5: For the past 6 days we have been trying to keep Mason alive with lots of vet intervention and tube feeding every two hours.  He did not make it and we are not sure why.  Rather sad at this moment.  The other pups are doing great.
10-8: Dancer and I went pheasant hunting this morning.  Saw 6 roosters, did not get a good shot.  A nice rancher moving his cows disrupted most of the hunt.  The pups are doing great.  Eyes starting to open and they are starting to try to walk around on all 4 paws.
10-17: Back from pheasant, sharp tail and rough grouse hunting around Fort Benton.  The pups are doing well and starting to be fun to handle!  They are developing a bit of personality now.
10-24: Did some elk hunting this weekend.  I am fighting a head cold (tested negative for covid twice).  Missed an opportunity on a big cow.  The pups are growing by leaps and bounds.  They are getting fun to play with and will come to a human voice!  We are feeding a mixture of: 1) Purina Pro Plan Puppy Lamb and Rice, and 2) Iams Puppy Chicken and Whole Grains.

11-3: The photos are late as we shot two 5x5 elk on Sat. and I shot two deer on Tue.  Plus processing them.  The pups are doing GREAT! and really developing personalities.
11-9-22: These are again late because of lots of bird and elk hunting.  It is very snowy and cold here now and we hope to shoot 4-6 elk this weekend!  We shall see.  The pups have just received their 6-way shots today (Canine Distemper-Adenovirus Type 2-Coronavirus-Parainfluenza-Parvovirus Vaccine).  Talk to your vet about when the next shots are due.  The pups have a vet wellness check on Wed. Nov 16th.  We will fit the Volhard puppy test into all this also.
11-11-22: I am elk hunting Sat. and Sun. (mostly out of cell service) with friends and relatives.  I would hope the 1st choice male and female folks will pick by Monday noon.  I am deer hunting Monday pm.  Feel free to call me after dark on the weekend and Monday am.  Thanks, Todd.
11-14-22: 'harvested a cow on Sat. and chased 7 bulls around on Sun.  They are big because they are smart...lol.
11-16-22: All have chosen.  Wellness check today.  All have made arraignments to pick up their pups.  We are looking forward to seeing you all Friday or Saturday!!  :^)

Military Tactical Stimulation – for young pups.

    Tactical stimulation (between toes)
Head held erect

Head pointed down

Supine position
Thermal stimulation

Tactile stimulation

  1. Tactile stimulation - holding the pup in one hand, the handler gently stimulates (tickles) the pup between the toes on any one foot using a Q-tip. It is not necessary to see that the pup is feeling the tickle. Time of stimulation 3 - 5 seconds. (Figure 1)
  2. Head held erect - using both hands, the pup is held perpendicular to the ground, (straight up), so that its head is directly above its tail. This is an upwards position. Time of stimulation 3 - 5 seconds. (Figure 2)
  3. Head pointed down - holding the pup firmly with both hands the head is reversed and is pointed downward so that it is pointing towards the ground. Time of stimulation 3 - 5 seconds. (Figure 3)
  4. Supine position - hold the pup so that its back is resting in the palm of both hands with its muzzle facing the ceiling. The pup while on its back is allowed to sleep. Time of stimulation 3-5 seconds. (Figure 4)
  5. Thermal stimulation—use a damp towel that has been cooled in a refrigerator for at least five minutes. Place the pup on the towel, feet down. Do not restrain it from moving. Time of stimulation 3-5 seconds.

"Oudi came to us from Sherry Larsen in Clovis, California. He has a truly effervescent personality--for Oudi every day is a great day and his enthusiasm for life is infectious. His name, which is pronounced "out-ee", is for the famous escape artist Harry Houdini (hOUDIni). On his first day with us Oudi managed to escape his x-pen, crate and climb over two baby gates. It took us awhile to decide on a name for him, but "Under Lock and Key" seems to suit him perfectly. Oudi went to summer camp with Ed Tillson of Tequila Kennels in the summer of 2013 and, fortunately for us, Ed had the patience and the expertise to recognize Oudi's potential. With Ed, Oudi picked up multiple derby placements and after a respite at home to finish his show title, Oudi came on strong in adult stakes in 2016. He kicked off the fall with multiple adult placements in big, competitive stakes. He finished his DC title with a 2nd place in the Grand Open Limited Gun Dog Stake at the Iowa Brittany Club in 2017. Since then Oudi has become a strong contender in the Midwest field trial circuit. He won the ABC Gun Dog Classic in May of 2018 and completed the year by winning the 2018 Garmin Award, which recognizes the top Brittany shooting dog in the country!

In the show ring Oudi won Best Puppy at his first show which happened to be the Iowa Brittany Club Specialty. He's been to the ABC National Specialty three times and placed in a lovely 6-9 month puppy class in 2012, the open dog class the following year and the field trial dog class in 2016. He finished his show championship in June of 2014 in twelve shows with three majors."

Note from Todd:  I saw Oudi win the Open Gun Dog at our Montana Brittany Club field trial in August, 2018.  He is pictured on page 12 of the September '18 edition of the American Brittany Club magazine winning the ABC Gun Dog Classic/Shooting Dog Championship with 5 finds!  That shows me he is a real Bird Finding Machine!
Click on Oudi's parents above to see his outstanding pedigree.
Note: in 2022 at 10 years of age Oudi is still winning field trials, siring large litters, and looking GREAT!  This bodes well for the longevity of these pups!!
